Performance Brake Pads for 10th and 11th Gen Civic Si (plus more) Are Here!

Brake pads are not rocket science.

A pad is made of about three parts; Backing plates, shims, and the friction material itself. There is a lot of nuance in the composition of the friction material though. This friction material dictates how well a brake pad will perform under different driving conditions. Back when we started development of these pads, which you can read about here, we set out to develop a street performance pad with a friction material to match. That means a pad that you can use on the street and for aggressive canyon driving and even light track work.

Yeah! We did that.

Backing plates have one simple job, they act as the foundation where the friction material and shims attach to. They also have an important role in helping keep heat away from other braking components. We made no crazy changes here but we did make backing plates in our Signature Orange for a pop of color.

OE like shims are maintained in our pads. These help reduce NVH (noise, vibration, harshness), deliver a smoother pedal feel, and offer a thermal barrier.

The last piece of the puzzle is selecting a proper friction material. Metallic or semi-metallic compounds used to be the norm in performance applications. They have excellent stopping power but also wear our rotors fast. They give off lots of dust and are noisy. Then, Ceramic compounds came onto the scene. A good ceramic compound eliminates a lot of dust compared to metallic. They are more rotor friendly and almost silent. You do give up a lot of performance though. Now hybrid ceramic/metallic compounds are available and that’s what we opted to use in the pad you see here. It’s the best of both worlds without much drawback…almost a perfect middle ground if you ask us.

The friction material we selected has a wide operating temperature range between outside air (ambient) temp and 600 degrees C. Why is that important? Because for a pad that you want to use on the street as well as more demanding conditions, you want a great stopping power in nearly all conditions. This means the pad will work as soon as you get into the car when it’s cold and also work well when things get warm like a blast down the canyon or those auto-x days.

Besides a wide operating temp range, the most crucial parameter of a pad is going to be its coefficient of friction number. That is….how much friction can it employ against the rotor at a point in time. Remember, friction is what helps us stop. The OEM brake pad from Honda has an average friction rating of about ~0.3 Mu and an operating range of somewhere around ambient to 400 degrees C. Our pad has a rating of 0.4-0.5 Mu. What this means is this pad has the ability to apply more friction to the rotor at a given time. The higher temp ceiling also means this pad won’t fade like the stock Honda pads when temps start to climb.

These pads are available now with front fitments for all 10th Gen Si models like the FC1 and FC3 as well as for the latest 11th Gen FE Civic Si and also the 5th Gen Integra 1.5! For the rear brake pads, we have a wider range of fitments as Honda re-used the same caliper/pad combo across many different cars. 2016+ Civic 2.0NA, Non-Si 10th and 11th Gen gens, all Type R FK8/FL5, and the Integra Type S DE5 models are all covered.
